WHY LOS ANGELES?

In our opinion, the most effective way to live out short term missions, both for those going to serve and those being served, involves long term relationship and partnership. Youth for Christ runs a trip called California Breakaway over every Easter break. Calbreak has offered two Project Serve days on every trip. For the last 15 years they have gone to serve at Union Rescue Mission(URM) on Skid Row. Carmen Pahl, team leader of Project Serve LA, decided it would be valuable to offer a week long serving experience at URM in partnership with California Breakaway. For the first time ever Youth For Christ is offering a week long Project Serve team experience helping serve the homeless on Skid Row. For many of students that go on Calbreak, their Project Serve option day is the highlight of their experience.

THE NATURE AND WORK OF OUR MINISTRY

During Project Serve our goal is to serve the homeless people of Los Angeles as best as we possibly can. Union Rescue Mission (URM) has a number of serving initiatives that help embrace men and women experiencing homelessness with love and compassion. Their mission is to give the people hope and healing so that they may experience a changed life and a way home. The types of serving experiences range from emergency services, training and equipping men through building a solid biblical foundation, giving women and children a safe space live and escape homelessness, along with providing minor medical care and offering a learning centre to train and equip the people with new skills and abilities they can bring into the world. (For more information on Union Rescue Mission, please visit https://urm.org).

Project Serve Los Angeles will be participating in URM’s Urban Experience. Urban Experience is like nothing you’ve ever done before. For five days you’ll see for yourself what it’s really like in the heart of Skid Row. We will be camping out on URM’s rooftop. We will serve men, women, and children experiencing homelessness all while getting an inside look at one of the largest rescue missions in the country. (For more information on URM’s Urban Experience, please visit https://urm.org/get-involved/experience/)

*NOTE ABOUT PROJECT SERVE SCHEDULING

One of the first and most important lessons learned on a trip like this is that schedules don‘t always go exactly the way they are planned. The weather, waiting for supplies or equipment, waiting for direction from our hosts, etc; any number of factors will teach patience and flexibility. However, we want you to have an idea of how you will spend your time while on this PROJECT SERVE trip. A suggested itinerary will be provided closer to the departure date.

INTRO TO FUNDRAISING

Every Team Member will be asked to raise $1800 towards the total Project Serve budget. Fundraising happens though personal correspondence. All team members will be assisted and encouraged by their team leaders to reach their personal financial goals.

1. DEADLINE FOR DOLLARS

Deadlines for having your $1800 in to the YFC® Office are as follows:

  • $100 deposit required with application (refunded if applicant is not part of 2019 PROJECT SERVE LA team) *note - the $200 deposit is part of the $1400

  • $900 fundraised by TBD

  • $1800 fundraised by TBD

We will e-mail students a list of their donors bi-weekly. We recommend that students use this list to send thank you notes to donors, and to keep track of how well they are doing at meeting the deadlines.

If you become a PROJECT SERVE LA team member, you will receive a complete fundraising packet and a document named “THE GUIDE” at the orientation meeting. You will receive additional fundraising information
at team training sessions.
